Anuradhapura Period
The transition of the Pre & Proto History to historical period of Sri Lanka begins with the Indo-Aryan settlers headed by the legendry ruler Vijaya from North India around the 5th century BC, thus commencing the Sinhalese race. The Anuradhagama was founded by one of his ministers named Anuradha which later became the city of Anuradhapura. Several other independent migrations formed other minor kingdoms at Mahagama in the South, Gokanna (Trincomalee) in the East, Kalyani (Kelaniya), in the west, Nagadipa (Jaffna) in the North. For about 15 centuries from the 5th century BC to the end of the 10th century AC. Anuradhapura maintained itself as the main Kingdom of Sri Lanka & consequently this era is termed "Anuradhapura Period".
