Kandy Period
Kandy the last capital city of Ancient Lanka, is located in the central hills. During the last phase of the Transitional Period, Kandy emerged as a stronghold, which withstood several intrusions by the southern kingdoms while major Transitional Period kingdoms continued as minor cities, several sub capitals viz. Peradeni- Nuwara, Nilambe- Nuwara, Aluth Nuwara, and diyathilaka Nuwara (Hanguranketha) including madamaha Nuwara were also in existence.
The Kandy Kingdom, originally called Senkadasaila, Sirivardhanapura or Senkadagalapura was established by king Wickramabhahu of Gampola. After the Portuguese, the other European powers, the Dutch & British were invalid in Sri Lanka politics during the period, when finally led to the succumbing of independence of Sri Lanka to the British in 1815.
