Stone Antiquities Gallery
The history of the Stone antiquities Gallery of the Colombo National Museum goes as for back as the commencement of the museum in 1877. when is museum was opened to the public 1st of January of that year the report states "on the lower floor in the western verandah are placed several inscribed monoliths from various parts of the island, the west room is devoted to large store antiquates………" within a decade many other stone antiquities were collected, beginning with the founder of the Museum Sir William Henry Gregory himself.
While developing the institution, the past directors were able to enlarge the collection of stone items ranging from architectural members, sculptures of the Buddha, Bodhisattva, gods of the Hindu pantheon & other divinities. The collection now consists of significant works of art & epigraphs that would add to the remains at various sites in revealing the grandeur of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage.
