| When Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka Polonnaruva (Ancient Pulastipura- City of Sage Pulasti) was known as Kadavurunuvara (Camp City) for the reason it was situated at a strategic position between the northern capital Anuradhapura & the southern sub-capital Mahagama. At the same time being on the high road connecting the north & south Polonnaruva was the meeting ground of the culture & civilization of Anuradhapura on the one hand & Mahagama on the other. The inroads made by south Indian Colas towards the end of the 10th century dealt the final blow to Anuradhapura, while their hegemony in Polonnaruva (renamed Jananath Mangalam). During this period 16 rulers held reign & one of the queens Leelavathi ruled Polonnaruva three times intermittently. Among the rulers, three figure heads come to the fore in the estimation of economics & culture achievements of the period, namely Vijayabahu I, Parakramabahu I & Nissankamalla. |
